John J. Murphy

John J. Murphy of Morris Township is one of the veteran members of the Morris County Freeholder Board, having been on the board since 1998. Murphy led the board as freeholder director in 2002 and again in 2003.

In 2012, Murphy is again freeholder liaison to the Department of Human Services, which includes the Division on Aging, Disabilities and Veterans Services, the Nutrition Program for senior citizens, Morris View Healthcare Center, the Juvenile Detention Center, the Morris County Youth Shelter, the Office of Temporary Assistance and the Workforce Investment Board.

Murphy also continues as freeholder liaison to Economic Development, working closely with the Morris County Chamber of Commerce as well as the Morris County Economic Development Corporation, where he serves as a member of the corporation's board of directors. He is also a member of the county government’s newly created Economic Advisory Committee.

Murphy in 2003 was instrumental in Morris County’s successful effort to purchase from the state more than 300 acres of excess land at Greystone Park State Psychiatric Hospital in Parsippany for $1. His vision of a "Central Park-type" use for the property became a reality in July 2008 with the dedication of Central Park of Morris County, a recreation complex that includes a Challenger ball field for mobility-impaired individuals, two in-line roller rinks, a dog park and a cross-country track course.

Central Park of Morris County is also home to several nonprofit organizations, with the long range plans calling for the establishment of a "nonprofit mall" on site.

Freeholder Murphy is a former member of the governing body in Morris Township, having served as a committeeman from 1994 to 1998 and as mayor of the community in 1996 and 1997.

Murphy is a financial advisor, and that expertise is a valuable asset to the freeholder board. A volunteer firefighter in Morris Township, Freeholder Murphy is married with three young daughters and one young son.
