Mosquito Lifecycle

Mosquitoes need standing water to lay their eggs.

  • Egg: Eggs are laid on the water surface or where flooding will occur.
  • Larva: The mosquito begins to develop in the water.
  • Pupa: Wings, legs and appendages develop. Still a waterborne stage of the mosquito.
  • Adult: The female adult has a blood meal, then returns to the water to start the cycle again.

  • There are 40 mosquito species in Morris County.
  • Not all mosquitoes bite humans.
  • Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water.
  • Mosquitoes develop from egg to adult in about 5- 7 days.
  • Any standing water makes a good habitat for mosquitoes.
  • Standing water from containers should be emptied whenever possible.
  • It is easiest to control mosquitoes as larvae and pupae.
