Korea: Forgotten Wars

Statues of soldiers in helmets and large rain jackets at the Korean War Memorial in Washington DC

The Korean War, fought between North Korea and South Korea from June 25, 1950 to July 27, 1953, involved the world’s major and developing powers of that era. China and Russia supported North Korea’s military efforts while the United Nations, primarily the United States, supported South Korea in what became one of the most destructive modern conflicts, with an estimated 5 million people being killed and major cities throughout the peninsula being destroyed. The Korean Armistice Agreement signed on July 27, 1953 ended large-scale hostilities and created the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) – a 2.5-mile wide, heavily militarized dividing line that still separates the north and south of the Korean peninsula today.

But no peace treaty was ever signed and hostilities have continued over the decades, particularly from Oct. 5, 1966 to Dec. 3, 1969, when North Korea launched many armed incursions through and beyond the DMZ into South Korea.  Hostilities continue to erupt, and American military personnel have continued to serve in South Korea and at the DMZ, lending to the term, “Veterans of the Z.”

The original list of Morris County Korean Wars veterans was published July 27, 2022, in honor of The Korean War Armistice.
