Man Charged in Connection with Arson Investigation

September 10, 2021

Morris County Prosecutor Robert J. Carroll, Morris County Prosecutor’s Office Chief of Detectives Christoph Kimker, and Mount Arlington Chief of Police Edward LaBruno announce the arrest of Devin Markowitz, 53 years old, of Mount Arlington, on charges related to an Attempted Aggravated Arson that occurred on April 12, 2021.

On April 13, 2021 law enforcement was alerted to a suspicious incident that occurred at the Lake Shore Village Clubhouse, Mt. Arlington.  The investigation revealed an individual had inserted a fuse into the gas tank of a pick-up truck with a cigarette attached to the end.  The fuse failed to ignite and the cigarette had burned out prior to any ignition.  The investigation revealed video of a suspect approaching the area of the vehicle at approximately 8:29 p.m. on April 12, 2021 and running away from the area approximately five minutes later.

Scientific DNA testing revealed that the cigarette was connected to Devin Markowitz.  Markowitz was previously married to the truck owner’s girlfriend.  Markowitz was charged with Attempted Aggravated Arson, second degree; Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purpose (a destructive device), second degree; and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (a destructive device), third degree.

Markowitz was previously charged in connection with this investigation on May 5, 2021 with two counts of Certain Persons Not to Have Weapons, second degree, when he was found to be in possession of two guns he was not lawfully permitted to possess.

In accordance with the Criminal Justice Reform Act, Markowitz has been remanded to the Morris County Correctional Facility pending future court proceedings.

If anyone has any information related to this investigation, they are encouraged to call the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office Arson and Environmental Crimes Unit at 973-285-6200.

A criminal complaint is merely an accusation.  Despite these accusations, the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until he has been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
