MCPO & HCPO Engage with Faculty and Students from P.S. 27

On March 18 and March 19, 2021, Morris County Prosecutor’s Office Sergeant Patrick LaGuerre and Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Allison Dixon met virtually with Crisis Intervention Teacher Joel Carhauz and close to 90 middle school students from Alfred Zampella School, P.S. 27, in Jersey City to discuss cyber bullying and bias crimes.

A recognized expert in bias incident and bias crimes, Sergeant LaGuerre of the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office joined Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office with making the virtual presentations.

Sergeant LaGuerre explained to the students what qualifies as bullying and potential bias crimes, as well as the repercussions that may result from committing these acts. He stressed the importance of properly reporting instances of bullying, both in person and online, and exercising good judgement when it comes to how you interact with others or what you post online.

Students were given the chance to ask questions and discuss their online activity and how to avoid conflict.

Acting Morris County Prosecutor Robert J. Carroll said “We are honored to work with Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez in spreading the message to our youth about the negative impacts of bullying and bias conduct.  We share an absolute commitment to help our students understand the long-term damage that can result from these behaviors, as well as identifying strategies to resist such actions.”
