Morris County Sheriff James M. Gannon issued the following statement on behalf of the entire agency on the killing of George Floyd in police custody in Minnesota on May 25, 2020.

"The killing of George Floyd was painful to watch and an affront to the overwhelming majority of police officers and law enforcement professionals, like those in this agency and throughout Morris County, who strive to do their jobs every day with courage and compassion.

The Morris County Sheriff's Office extends its deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Floyd.

Moreover, while the frustration - and even anger - at Mr. Floyd's death is completely justified and understandable, the destruction of property and violent riots are not. In the words of Dr. King: 'Nonviolence is a powerful and just weapon, which cuts without wounding and ennobles the man who wields it. It is a sword that heals.'

The original sin of slavery is still a stain on this country, but only through tearing down the walls of race that divide us, can we truly be one nation, united under God."
