This clerical position in the Morris County Supt of Schools office job responsibilities focus on the certification process assisting prospective teachers and substitutes in becoming certified, in accordance with state examiner guidelines.  The successful candidate will work directly with the school districts on a daily basis working with their school calendars, monitoring, teaching and substitute applications, criminal history reports, emergency certification.  This position requires excellent technological, organizational, and communication skills and understands the importance of confidentiality. The successful candidate should be a team player with the ability to multi-task, work under pressure in a fast-paced environment and be self-motivated. The work involves working with the public, members of the Education Office and their staff, as well as school employees and their stakeholders.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Provides Professional Licensing expertise to county office personnel, public and private schools and the general public
  • Processes NJEdCert substitute teacher applications
  • While processing, the Certificate Specialist communicates with applicants and the school district
  • Communications with county residents the prerequisite application requirements for teacher and substitute teacher certification
  • Reviews applications from NJEdCert
  • Communicates with the NJ Department of Education and all school districts in Somerset County
  • Aligns New Jersey SMART data with district reporting to ensure employees are properly certified and assigned
  • Distributes revoked and suspended certification list to districts
  • Daily log in to NJEdCert for teacher status checks
  • Preparation of time-sensitive state reports
  • Surveys of school districts
  • Certification requirements and processing
  • Scheduling of meetings
  • Assist with other duties of the Education Office
  • Organization and daily filing of purchase orders/invoices
  • Answering phones
  • General administrative tasks including working with other County departments (e.g. IT)


The successful candidates should have  a proficient understanding of Word, Excel and possess excellent communication/telephone skills.
