Description

The County of Morris is seeking a candidate for the position of Assistant Fire Marshal. The ideal candidate will be a self-motivated, organized, customer driven individual who is committed to ensuring a safe environment for those individuals who work and visit a County of Morris Facility. The Morris County Fire Marshals Office is tasked with enforcing the NJ Uniform Fire Code in all buildings owned or leased by the County of Morris. The Fire Marshals Office fulfills all the regulatory requirements of a Local Enforcing Agency under the NJ Uniform Fire Code.

The Fire Marshal Office is also responsible for the maintenance, operation and monitoring of various life safety systems found throughout County buildings including but not limited to fire alarm detection/notification systems, fire sprinkler systems, fire extinguishers, special agent suppression systems, and means of egress maintenance. The Office is also called upon to review and comment on various construction and alteration plans to help ensure Code compliance with both the NJ Uniform Fire Code and the NJ Uniform Building Code.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

The successful candidate should be ready to participate, at a minimum, the following activities:

  • Inspection and reinspection of all types of occupancies throughout Morris County
  • Respond and investigate all types of fire and life safety system complaints
  • Coordinate and assist with all types of life safety system inspections and repairs
  • Review and comment on all types of construction plans including new construction and repairs/alterations
  • Participate in proactive planning on life safety system maintenance
  • Review and comment on all types of emergency action plans
  • Assist in all investigations of any fire department response to a County facility
  • Interact with all levels of County employees in a professional manner
  • Gain a working knowledge of the County’s Fire Alarm receiving system
  • Gain a working knowledge of all life safety systems located within County facilities

Qualifications

Required qualifications include:

  • Current certification as a Fire Official by the NJ Division of Fire Safety
  • Current certification as a Fire Fighter Level 1 by the NJ Division of Fire Safety
  • Current certification as a Level 2 Incident Commander by the NJ Division of Fire Safety
  • 3 years experience as a working fire inspector/fire official
  • 3 years experience as an active fire fighter
  • Must be physically able to perform the critical components of the job
  • Have a working knowledge of the operations and maintenance for all types of fire sprinkler systems and capable of minor repairs to various systems
  • Have a working knowledge of the operations and maintenance for all types of fire detection/notification systems and capable of minor repairs to various systems
  • Strong working knowledge of the NJ Uniform Fire Code, the NJ Uniform Building Code and various Life Safety and NFPA Standards
  • Knowledge of various CMS (Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services) standards
  • Ability to apply judgment, knowledge, training and experience to asses and determine compliance, collect and review data, and determine an appropriate course of action
  • Ability to use various instruments, tools, methods and processes requiring some analytical skill and judgment
  • Ability to apply complex standards to situations and present suggested course of actions
  • Good to excellent verbal and written communication skills, working knowledge of MS Office Suite and computer-based fire inspection record management systems
  • Knowledgeable of basic hazardous material response procedures
  • Be able to both apply and enforce proper safety practices at all times
  • High school graduate or equivalent required
