Morris County Disaster Recovery Center Closing Wednesday

Federal Assistance Remains Available

The Morris County Disaster Recovery Center, which the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) opened in Morris Plains to assist residents impacted by the remnants of Hurricane Ida, will close at the end of the business day this Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2021.

The temporary center, housed in the Morris Plains Community Center at 51 Jim Fear Dr., Morris Plains, N.J. since Sept. 20, will be open on its final day of operations from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. However, residents may still file claims and contact FEMA.

The fastest and easiest way for anyone in New Jersey to apply for assistance is by visiting: fema.gov/disaster/4614.

If it is not possible to apply online, call 800-621-3362 (TTY: 800-462-7585).

The toll-free telephone lines operate are currently operating 24 hours per day, seven days a week. If you use a relay service, such as video relay service (VRS), captioned telephone service or others, give FEMA the number for that service.

When you apply for assistance, have the following information readily available:

  • A current phone number where you can be contacted
  • Your address at the time of the disaster and the address where you are now staying
  • Your Social Security number, if available
  • A general list of damage and losses
  • If insured, the policy number or the agent and/or the company name

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) also continues to offer assistance.

Applicants should apply under SBA declaration # 17143, not for the COVID-19 incident.

The filing deadline to return applications for physical property damage is Nov. 4, 2021. The deadline to return economic injury applications is June 6, 2022.

Businesses and private nonprofit organizations of any size may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace disaster-damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets. Applicants may be eligible for a loan amount increase up to 20 percent of their physical damages, as verified by the SBA, for mitigation purposes. Eligible mitigation improvements may include a sump pump, elevation, French drain or retaining wall to help protect property and occupants from future damage caused by a similar disaster.

For small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private nonprofit organizations, the SBA offers Economic Injury Disaster Loans to help meet working capital needs caused by the disaster.

Economic Injury Disaster Loan assistance is available regardless of whether the business suffered any physical property damage.

Disaster loans up to $200,000 are available to homeowners to repair or replace disaster-damaged or destroyed real estate. Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace disaster-damaged or destroyed personal property.
