Morris County Surrogate Heather J. Darling met with the Morris County Advisory Council on Aging, Disabilities, and Veterans this week to share helpful information on core estate-planning tools. She outlined when different types of trusts can be useful for safeguarding assets or benefits and carrying out a family’s wishes. The discussion reflected her office’s commitment to helping residents plan ahead and avoid confusion or unnecessary expense.
She also welcomed questions from the council and the end of her discussion as she always does. During the question and answer period, Surrogate Darling discussed the role of life estates in real estate transfers to family members. She also clarified the distinction between a Power of Attorney and adult guardianship—when proactive documents can authorize trusted decision-makers, and when the courts may need to step in.
