Financial Crimes Prosecutors' Roundtable
Morris County Prosecutor's Office
Financial Crimes Prosecutors' Roundtable
Published on May 05, 2014
Acting Morris County Prosecutor Fredric M. Knapp announces that the Financial Crimes Unit of the Morris County Prosecutor's Office will be hosting a Financial Crimes Prosecutors' Roundtable for Assistant Prosecutors and Investigative Personnel. Eleven Northern New Jersey County Prosecutor's Offices will be participating in the event.
According to Acting Morris County Prosecutor Knapp, financial crimes can be amongst the most difficult types of crimes to detect and prosecute due to their highly complicated and technologically sophisticated nature. Moreover, since financial crimes often exceed the boundaries of any single jurisdiction, effective prevention will require cooperation between the Counties. In an effort to combat one of the fastest growing and quickly evolving areas of concern for law enforcement, this Roundtable will provide a venue where Prosecutors and Investigators will come together to discuss the latest trends, share ideas, resources and remedies toward the goal of preventing and prosecuting financial crimes.
The Roundtable will allow the Northern New Jersey County Prosecutor's Offices to establish a working group to consult with each other and share information and expertise. The group will provide practical guidance for implementing effective programs and strategies to deter and combat newly emerging financial crimes such as the Green Dot MoneyPak Card Scam.
The Green Dot MoneyPak cards are reloadable debit cards.
These cards are used by people who typically do not have bank accounts.
The money is loaded directly onto the card. Scammers convince victims through various means including deception, intimidation and harassment to provide the scammer with the card number.
Anyone the victim shares the card number with now has instant access to any cash loaded onto the card. Scammers love these cards because it creates a way for them to steal money and launder illicit proceeds of crime in an untraceable manner.
According to Acting Prosecutor Knapp, financial crimes are absolutely devastating to their victims. This Roundtable event will truly be a step in the right direction in our on-going efforts to successfully prosecute those individuals who perpetrate these damaging criminal acts.
