Acting Morris County Prosecutor Fredric M. Knapp announced today that the Honorable Robert Gilson, J.S.C. sentenced Amalia Mirasola, age 47 of Butler, New Jersey, to 40 years in State Prison in connection with the murder of her husband, Carl Mirasola.
On January 31, 2013, a jury found the defendant guilty of Murder and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose in the shooting death of her husband on May 22, 2010. Carl Mirasola was 43 years old at the time of his death. The shooting occurred at the Mirasola's Butler home.
Judge Gilson sentenced Mirasola to 40 years in New Jersey State Prison. She is required to serve 85 percent of her sentence under New Jersey's No Early Release Act (NERA) before becoming eligible for parole. The defendant will also be subject to 5 years of parole supervision. Assistant Prosecutor Matthew Troiano represented the State at the sentencing.
Acting Morris County Prosecutor Knapp stated, The sentence was an appropriate exercise of the Judge's discretion and the Court recognized the need for society to deter all from acts of violence, even those people who may suffer from illness. Hopefully, the family finds solace.
Acting Morris County Prosecutor Knapp thanked Chief Edward Card and the Butler Police Department, Sheriff Edward Rochford and the Morris County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Section, the Morris County Medical Examiner's Office, the New Jersey State Police and the Morris County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit for their efforts resulting in today's sentence.
