Firearms Instructor Course

CLASS IS FULL

 Pre‑requisite:

  • Successful completion of a basic firearms course.
  • Candidates must achieve an average score of 95% or better during three (3) pre-qualification runs of the HQC1 in the morning of the first day of class to be admitted into the course.
  • Candidates must also achieve a score of 80% or better in the HNQC and demonstrate the safe handle their firearms throughout the course to successfully complete the course.

This five-day course provides law enforcement agencies with trained firearms instructors who are certified to instruct and qualify their department personnel in the safe use and handling of firearms. Instruction will include use of force, nomenclature and operation of firearms, care and cleaning of weapons, target evaluation and analysis, diagnosing shooter error, proficiency drills, range operation and management, firearm safety, basic shooting principles, various firearm-training exercises, subdued light firing, and shotgun training.  

Successful completion fulfills one of the five requirements for certification as a Police Training Commission Firearms Instructor to instruct in the Basic Course for Police Officers and the Basic Course for Corrections Officers.

The other requirements being, three years’ experience in firearms training, two years of college, completion of a Methods of Instruction Course, as well as the endorsement of the Academy Director, Agency Chief and Academy Rangemaster.

Required Equipment

  • Range glasses, Hearing protection and Baseball style hat
  • Department Handgun – Shotgun – Duty Holster – Flashlight – Magazines
  • 1,000 rounds of Factory Loaded Service Ammunition or substantially identical practice ammunition
  • 20 rounds of rifle slug ammunition (for agencies using slug ammunition)
  • 20 rounds 00 Buck

The department armorer must check weapons prior to the course to ensure their safe condition.

NOTE:  The Firearms Verification Form is located on the Academy Web site, www.morriscountynj.gov/academy, must accompany the registration.
