Law of Interrogation, Video Recordings, Courtroom Testimony

This block of instruction will provide police officers with an overview of New Jersey’s laws pertaining to:

LAW OF INTERROGATION & VIDEO RECORDING OF SUSPECT INTERVIEWS  This course will explore the laws governing the questioning of suspects and the legal requirements of video recording of suspect interviews.  When a suspect must be advised of his/her rights and when the police must cease interrogation.  Tactical and technical considerations of the interview and recording process and investigative techniques that will enable you to interrogate suspects thoroughly while obeying the case laws restricting police interrogation.

EYEWITNESS IDENTIFICATION & LINE-UPS AND MEMORIALIZING OUT-OF-COURT IDENTIFICATIONS This course is designed to acquaint the attendee with current research and the Attorney General Guidelines on Eyewitness Identifications, Photo Line-ups and Live Line-ups.  Practical examples of building a defensible line-up and the process of showing a line-up to a witness will be used.  The course will also provide police officers with the legal requirements of accurately and properly recording the results of out-of-court identifications performed by witnesses.

COURTROOM TESTIMONY FOR POLICE OFFICERS This program will help prepare law enforcement personnel of any rank who will find themselves in the position of providing testimony in a courtroom setting.  This program will assist officers in understanding techniques used by prosecutors and defense attorneys in direct and cross examinations.  Attendees will also observe and participate in mock trial situations in order to practically apply the skills learned.
