Fire Officer 1 & 2

The Fire Officer Course curriculum is designed to give the fire company officer a comprehensive view of the fire organization and define his responsibility to the department, the public, and municipal management.  It includes, but is not limited to, Fire Department Management, Fire Ground Command, and Suppression Principles and Techniques. 

Note: This class runs on Monday and Wednesday nights 

Class size:    Minimum 10 students - Maximum 20 students

PRE-REQUISITES: Successful Completion of Fire Fighter 1, Fire Fighter 2, ICS I-200, and also FEMA NFA ISO, Principles of Building Construction, and Strategy & Tactics.  Documentation of successful completion must accompany registration if not conducted by our staff at Morris County Public Safety Training Academy.

NJ DFS – FIRE OFFICER II: This course is designed for the certified Fire Officer I, who desires promotion, or wishes to remain versed in essential and innovative management, leadership, and human relations methods. The course curriculum corresponds to the requirements as set forth in N.F.P.A. 1021 (Professional Qualifications) for Level II in personnel and fireground management. This course of instruction will take the Fire Officer I to the next level of leadership. Upon completion, students will have a better understanding of the following topics: managing personnel, community and governmental relationships, administration, inspection and investigation, NIMS, and public speaking. Students will be eligible to apply to the NJ Division of Fire Safety for certification as a Fire Officer II. PREREQUISITE: NJ DFS FIRE OFFICER I

 

REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS:  Jones and Bartlett-Fire Officer 4th Edition and Jones and Bartlett Firefighting Strategy & Tactics 4th Edition.

The book must be purchased prior to the start of the class

FEMA NFA INCIDENT SAFETY OFFICER

The goal of this course is to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the Incident Safety Officer (ISO) during incident operations & training evolutions.  The course is incident-specific, scenario-oriented designed to teach students what an ISO needs to know at an incident.  Instructor-led discussion, multimedia activities and small group discussions to convey instructional points will be used.  Target Audience:  Fire & EMS responders who may be designated by the Incident Commander as an ISO while working within an Incident Command System.  These assignments may occur during firefighting, EMS, special operations type incidents, and training evolutions.

PRINCIPLES OF BUILDING CONSTRUCTION

This course addresses the need for fire service Incident Commanders (IC’s) to understand fully building construction, methods of construction, materials used in building construction, and fire-resistance requirements in order to conduct fire scene operations safety and make sound strategic decision.  The intent of this course is to prepare IC’s, Company Officers, Safety Officers, and others to read a building correctly and us this knowledge in their decision-making process.

STRATEGY & TACTICS FOR INITIAL COMPANY OPERATIONS

The goal of this course is designed to develop the management skills needed by Company Officers to accomplish assigned tactics at structure fires.  It is important to understand that the course material was developed for newly appointed officers or firefighters who may have acting CO responsibilities, but it would provide an excellent review for experience officers.  All activities and scenarios used in this course are based on structure fires.  There will be a walk-through activity followed by one or more small group, scenario-driven activities for each of the areas covered
