Suicide by Cop (SbC) is becoming a more frequently occurring event in New Jersey. There are many variables that will be discussed that lead to a SbC incident.  Deinstitutionalization, criminal past, present criminal action, drug and/or alcohol use, are some of ones that will be examined. We will also explain the concept of less-than lethal force, concerns of crisis management, legal defense for law enforcement, and recent studies that have been done on the subject. This course will inform participants all the particulars of Suicide by Cop.  They will be able to differentiate between different types of behavioral indicators that can help predict an incident.  They will learn issues of the mentally ill in New Jersey and mental health as a variable in SbC.  They will gain insight of the role the media plays in regards to SbC.  At the completion of this course they will have a strong understanding of Suicide by Cop as well as other law enforcement concerns. The course is open to all police personnel regardless of rank or current assignment. The ultimate goal of the in-service class is to get this needed information to as many law enforcement officers as possible in an effort to keep them safer.
