PRE-REQUISITE: Public Safety Telecommunication certificate

The purpose of this interactive workshop is to ensure the 9-1-1 Officer understands different types of law, legal concepts, terms, and specific issues related to 9‐1‐1 and relationship to their centers.

This course on 9-1-1 liability, legal issues, and the law is designed to provide accurate and authoritative information in regard to the subject matter covered. It is provided with the understanding of the user that the author or publisher is not engaged in rendering legal advice or services.

It is possible that certain federal, state or local regulations may restrict or require modification of the recommendations contained in this document. Therefore, this document should not be the only source of information used.

Student Performance Objectives

By the end of the course, the communications officer should be able to:

Demonstrate an understanding of different types of law
Demonstrate an understanding of legal terms
Demonstrate an understanding of the liabilities of a 9-1-1 communications officer
Demonstrate an understanding of the potential for negligence in a 9-1-1 center

This eight (8) hour course covers both EMD and Basic Telecommunication continuing education that meets the ongoing training requirement under the New Jersey 9-1-1 Emergency Telephone System Regulations [17:24-2.2(c)2].
