Prescription Drug Drop Box Program

Dispose of prescription drugs safely! Bring your unused or expired prescription drugs to participating towns.

This program is for residents only. Doctors’ offices, pharmacies, and other medical institutions must dispose of drugs via FDA/DEA guidelines.

We accept prescriptions, prescription patches, prescription medications, prescription ointments, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, samples, and pet medications. We do NOT accept hydrogen peroxide, inhalers, aerosols, ointments liquids and lotions, medications from businesses/clinics, needles, or thermometers.

The Morris County Sheriff’s Medical Collection Unit was started in 2013 in collaboration with Barbra Kaufman and the Community Coalition for a Safe and Healthy Morris.

Each police department contacts the Morris County Sheriff’s Office and together the prescription medications are collected.  The designated municipal police officer and a Sheriff’s Officer collect the medications from the locked boxes that are kept in the lobbies of the local municipal police departments. Once the medications are collected they are brought back to our Evidence Unit and are logged and stored until destruction.

To date, we have destroyed over 12,000 pounds of prescription medications. The Morris County Sheriff’s Office has been working with Barbra Kaufman in expanding our program to additional towns.  This program allows people to discard their medications in a safe and secure location.

For Morris County employees and residents, there is an additional Prescription Drug Collection Drop Box located inside the front lobby of the Morris County Courthouse located at 56 Washington Street in Morristown, to safety and conveniently dispose of unwanted or leftover prescription drugs. The locked Prescription Collection Drug Drop Box is available to the public and Morris County employees during normal business hours, Monday to Friday 8:00am to 4:00pm.

It is important to note that businesses or clinics may not use the Prescription Drug Collection Drop Box to dispose of medications.  Acceptable items include pills, capsules, patches, vitamins, samples, pet medications and over-the-counter medications.  Medication packaging also will be accepted, such as pill bottles and small medication boxes.

Not acceptable items are syringes, liquids, lances for diabetic testing, inhalers, thermometers and aerosol cans, and of course any type of trash.
