Brief Description of Job and Division/Department

 Under direction, operates one or more types of gasoline or diesel powered equipment to perform assignments to push, pull, pile, lift, and load materials; clears brush and debris; levels earth to rough specification on simple, rolling terrain and/or level surfaces; inspects equipment daily and reports unsafe conditions; services and makes minor emergency repairs in garage or field; lubricates/oils equipment; does other related duties.

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility-

  •  Assist and support for the permanent Household Hazardous Waste facility located on grounds of the Mount Olive Transfer Station. 
  • Assist with the management and general maintenance of the HHW facility operations.
  • Participate in hazardous waste training events for MUA employees as appropriate.

Vegetative Waste Management-

  • Assist and support the vegetative waste program and facilities including operations, labor, equipment and site maintenance.
  • Operation of site equipment related to both Vegetative Waste facilities, including but not reduced to, front-end loaders, dump trucks, grinders, skid-steers, log shearers, and window turners.
  • Participate in heavy equipment and safety training as required by the MCMUA.
  • Assist Manager(s) in maintaining contact and communication with Morris County municipalities concerning vegetative waste program.
  • Work with professional consultants to improve or enhance vegetative waste program.
  • Assist and complete compost and wood mulch deliveries within Morris County when required.
  • Assist with fieldwork, as required, to insure that necessary jobs/projects are completed.
  • Assist in the coordination with other County departments for requisite labor, equipment and project needs.

Works with employees of these facilities, assists with the enforcement and communication of policies, procedures and current programs through regularly scheduled meetings; maintains all necessary documentation in an accurate timely manner.

Stays informed, knowledgeable and current with all areas of facility permits, regulations, OSHA requirements, policies and industry standards.

Curbside Recycling Operations-

  • Operate and assist in driving MCMUA collection vehicle
  • Under direction drives, cleans, services, and makes minor repairs to a sanitation truck; occasionally may perform manual and unskilled laboring work in connection with sanitation truck driving; does related work as required.
  • Drives to landfill or other designated area and dumps refuse.  Checks on pressure gauges for hydraulic pumps and other mechanisms.  May be required to assist in loading sanitation truck.  Cleans and greases sanitation truck.  Makes minor repairs to sanitation truck.  Keeps necessary records.  May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.  Daily inspections of vehicle prior to route departure.
  • Under direction, performs arduous tasks involved in loading garbage and refuse from sidewalks and curbs into trucks; does other related duties as required.
  • Collects rubbish and other refuse.  Lifts filled refuse cans to truck, and empties can into truck.  Redeposits cans at the curb.  Operates mechanisms at the rear of trucks.  Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Qualifications

  • At least one year experience working in a regulatory environment.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds repeatedly.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with employees and public officials.
  • Ability to prepare detailed correspondence.
  • Ability to maintain essential records and files.
  • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.  American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

License

Appointees must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.

Note: The responsibility for ensuring that employees possess the required motor vehicle license, commensurate with the class and type of vehicles they operate, rests with the appointing authority.  If employee does not possess an appropriate CDL, the MCMUA will assist in the process of completing.
