Description of Job and Division/Department

Morris County Division of Weights and Measures’ mission is to safeguard the public in matters concerning commercial transactions involving commodities sold to consumers and businesses, including the determination of net quantities, accurate pricing, fair competition, and enforcement of equity in the marketplace. In addition, the Division of Weights and Measures conducts unannounced inspections and tests of commercial weighing, measuring, timing, and counting devices, which are used to sell various commodities and services to consumers. These inspections and tests are essential to eliminate the potential for fraud, carelessness, and misrepresentations in the marketplace. Weights and Measures officers are empowered by law to remove those devices and commodities that do not provide accurate measurements.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Performs productive work during a three-year apprenticeship under the close supervision of a Senior Weights and Measures Inspector or Supervisor while receiving formal professional development and on the job training in the inspection and testing of weighing and measuring devices. Performs other related duties as required. Common Shift Work: Monday-Friday (8AM-4PM)

  • Possesses the ability to inspect and test all types of weighting and measuring devices used for a commercial purpose.
  • Learns to conduct commodity audits in retail establishments to ensure legal compliance and prepares summonses when appropriate.
  • Capable of dispensing gasoline, aviation fuel, oil, and other petroleum products to determine accuracy of equipment tested and sealing of approved or condemned equipment.
  • Prepares accurate reports of tests, inspections, and investigations containing observations, findings, conclusions, recommendations, and actions taken.
  • Able to testify in civil court proceedings as a witness for the state concerning violations of weights and measures protocols, statutes, and regulations.

 

Qualifications

Appointees are required to possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license. Appointees are required to possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated [CDL training is offered during apprenticeship]. Appointees are required to successfully complete the Weights and Measures Basic Training Program conducted by the State Office of Weights and Measures during the apprenticeship. Required to lift 50LB weights repeatedly to test devices. Able to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.

ADVANCEMENT: 

Per Civil Service requirements: 

Appointee's work performance will be reviewed and rated semi-annually during each twelve (12) months of the three (3) year apprenticeship program.  Upon successful completion of the thirty-six (36) month apprenticeship program, appointees will be eligible for advancement to the title of Weights and Measures Inspector 1 in State service, or to the title of Assistant Superintendent of Weights and Measures in local service, in accordance with New Jersey Civil Service Commission procedures. 

The inability of an employee in the Apprentice title to satisfactorily complete the training period and/or attain a level of performance warranting advancement to the title of Weights and Measures Inspector 1 in State service or the title of Assistant Superintendent of Weights and Measures in local service, shall be considered cause for separation from employment.
