Beach Street Bridge Rehabilitation Begins Aug. 13

No Through Traffic on Beach Street in Rockaway Borough

Beach Street in Rockaway Borough will be closed to through traffic beginning on or about Thursday, Aug. 13 for the rehabilitation of the Beach Street Bridge over the Rockaway River.

Construction is scheduled to occur from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. during regular business days Monday through Friday. The project is expected to take approximately three months to complete, weather permitting.

The bridge closure will require motorists to follow a signed detour of approximately 1.75 miles via East Main Street, Jackson Avenue, Union Street and Stickle Avenue. Motorists are advised to drive with caution, expect delays and plan alternate routes.

The existing bridge, a single-span steel girder structure built in 1970, remains structurally sound, but its concrete driving surface has deteriorated over time. Years of patching have failed to prevent recurring potholes, making a deck replacement the most practical and cost-effective solution to extend the bridge's service life.

As part of the project, the bridge's structural steel girders will also be sandblasted and repainted to help protect the bridge for decades to come.

The $1,268,008 project is being completed by Colonnelli Brothers Inc. of Hackensack, N.J., under contract with Morris County.
