Road to be Closed Starting Monday (Aug. 27) for about Six Weeks (Exemption for School Vehicles)

The Brook Valley Road bridge in Montville, a small span that is located between Surprise Lake and the Taylortown Reservoir, will be closed to most traffic for about six weeks, starting on Monday, for a replacement project that will resolve structural deterioration issues.

There will be a traffic exemption, however, for school buses and other school vehicles starting on Sept. 3 through the end of the project.

Officially known as Morris County Bridge No. 1400-294, the span crosses a tributary to Lake Valhalla (Crooked Brook). While the bridge currently is safe to use, corrosion that was discovered by county bridge crews must be dealt with as soon as possible to prevent safety issues.

The repair work will be done by Salmon Brothers contractors from Netcong at a cost of $210,000 in county funds. The work has been scheduled to start on Monday Aug. 27, with a tentative completion date of Oct. 1.

County officials have reached out to officials in Montville to coordinate the work schedule and school bus travel exemption. Motorists are advised to plan now for alternate routes.

The Brook Valley Road bridge is a single-span, steel boiler pipe culvert structure that carries about 60 vehicles daily, and has a deck width of 28 feet. Its age is unknown.

The bridge pipe is severely corroded, which prompted the need for replacement.

The proposed replacement bridge will consist of a reinforced concrete pipe with concrete headwalls. Painted fencing will be mounted to the headwalls and a stained guide rail will be installed across the culvert and along the approaches.
