Sette received Daytop's Silver Star award at the event, which was held at the Palace at Somerset Park in Somerset. The Gala Honoree was Nelson Ferreira, CEO of Ferreira Construction Co., another staunch supporter of Daytop's mission and programs.

Gov. Christie, in his remarks, said that Sette was instrumental in his involvement in issues regarding drub abuse and addiction, leading to his current championing of efforts to deal with the nation's opioid crisis. He noted that 64,000 people died in the United States last year died from an overdose -- or 175 people a day -- more than all those who died from handgun violence and automobile accidents combined, said Gov. "I'm honored to be here tonight to introduce the person who introduced me to this cause,'' said the Governor.

"In 1995, I was a 32-year- old brand new Freeholder in Morris County, and one of the folks (John Sette) who had been a promoter of my candidacy and encouraged me to go on the Freeholder board then told me here's what you need to do once you get there. You need to go up to Daytop Village and you need to go see Father Joe Hennen (founder of Daytop Village).''

John Sette's been speaking out for 25 years on this problem; 25 years ago when very few people were saying anything, John was saying it,'' added the Governor.

Sette, of Morris Township, was a Morris County Freeholder from 1989 through 1991, and joined the Daytop NJ board in 1991. He also is a founding member and chair of the Morris County Sheriff's Crime Stoppers program, was chairman of the Morris County Republican Committee, and chairman of the NJ Sheriff's Political Action Committee.
