Memorial Day Observances Continue in Morris County This Weekend

Several Local Ceremonies and Parades Scheduled Through Monday

Multiple Memorial Day celebrations and parades are scheduled for this weekend, with the pandemic restrictions slowly being lifted.  The events follow the Morris County Annual Memorial Day Observances hosted earlier this week by the Morris County Board of County Commissioner in Morristown.

A list of some of the local events is included below.

Morris Plains Memorial Day Service and 35th Annual Parade on Saturday, May 29.

Starting at 9 a.m., the Borough of Morris Plains will hold its annual Memorial Day service at Robert’s Garden on the corner of Glenbrook Road and Mountain Way, followed by a parade that has traditionally been Morris County’s largest for Memorial Day.

Members of the Morris Plains VFW, Watnong Post 3401, and the Denville American Legion, Post 390, will conduct the ceremony, which will be followed by remarks from a guest speaker, Plummer Williams of the VFW Post 3401.

The Borough’s 35th Annual 2021_Morris_County_Memorial Day_0691.jpg Memorial Day Parade will start at 9:30 a.m. near the intersection of Glenbrook Road and Mountain Way. The parade route travels south on Mountain Way, east on Rosedale Ave, then north along Speedwell Avenue, past the reviewing stand at the corner of Franklin Place, opposite the railroad station. The parade route continues north up Littleton Road and north up Route 53, where it ends at the VFW Watnong Post 3401.

Alice McGreevy, proprietor of Arthur’s Tavern, is the 2021  Grand Marshal and will be honored for her long-time support of activities in Morris Plains. Mrs. McGreevy will be represented by her daughter, Alyse Moore-Puentes, and grandchildren, Daniel, age 8, and Ava, age 6.

The parade will consist of 75 units representing local and county organizations with 13 bands, including the Orange High School Marching Tornadoes Band, the Wholly Brass Band and the Passaic County Marching Band. Featured at the end of the Parade will be the Morristown High School Marching Colonials.

A highlight of the Parade will be an appearance by the Future Marines of RSS Northwest.

The Golden Gup and Lulu also will appear and play patriotic tunes while Korean War Veteran Dudley Warner while accompanied by Mickey and Minnie Mouse.

Mount Arlington Borough Memorial Day Observance on Saturday, May 29.

Kick off is 11 a.m. at Memorial Park. For those who are unable to join in person, the ceremony will be livestreamed on the Borough’s Facebook page. The event will be shared across all the Borough’s social media platforms and on the Borough's Website.

Immediately following the ceremony, the Lake Hopatcong Elks Lodge 782 will be offering hot dogs and soda to the public at its lodge at 201 Howard Boulevard, Mount Arlington, N.J.

*In the event of rain, the Ceremony will take place at the Elks Lodge at 11:00 am.

Montville Township Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 31.

At 11 a.m., VFW Post 5481 will present its annual Memorial Day commemoration, to be held in-person at the VFW Post, at the Tank Monument in Community Park at 132 Changebridge Road, Montville, N.J.

The special memorial ceremony will honor six VFW combat veterans who died during the COVID-19 pandemic, and include a tribute to women in the military marked by an honored local active-duty military guest speaker, Capt. Lindsey Danilack Chrismon.

There will also be a flyover by a Coast Guard plane.

Music will be performed by Alus and Nick Sisco.

2021_Morris_County_Memorial Day_0163.jpg Mountain Lakes Borough Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony on Monday, May 31.

The Borough is inviting all residents, friends and neighbors to this year’s Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony those men and women who have given their lives for our country and who have helped to preserve the freedoms we enjoy today.

 The parade will step off at 10 a.m. in front of Wildwood School on Glen Road, and the ceremonies will take place immediately following the parade at Memorial Park.

The Parade route will be the same as in years past, beginning on Glen Road, moving out to the Boulevard and then down Lake Drive.  Detours for vehicular traffic will be in place. In the event of inclement weather, there will be no parade. Instead, the traditional placement of the wreaths will take place at 9:30 a.m. at Memorial Park.

Updates regarding parade status will be posted to the Borough website.

Roxbury Township Memorial Day Ceremony Monday, May 31.

The ceremony will begin 11:00 AM at the Veterans’ Memorial on the island at Horseshoe Lake, 72 Eyland Avenue, Succasunna NJ.

Roxbury Township and the Roxbury Veterans of Foreign War Post 2833 are hosting the ceremony of remembrance. No parade will be held this year.2021_Morris_County_Memorial Day_0125.jpg

All are invited to attend the ceremony to honor the memory of those Veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country.

In case of rain, the ceremony will take place at the nearby picnic pavilion.

Current COVID-19 guidelines/restrictions will be in effect.
