Morris County Fall Resurfacing: Roads in Hanover and Long Hill Underway, with Boonton Next

THREE MAJOR INTERSECTIONS TO BE DONE IN EARLY NOVEMBER

Morris County's 2017 road resurfacing program has moved into the final, fall schedule, with projects underway in Hanover and Long Hill, and work set to start next week in Boonton as part of the Board of Freeholders' aggressive 2017 paving effort.

Moris County Freeholders road resurfacing signs(, 0B)Paving is currently underway on a 3.4-mile stretch of Valley Road in Long Hill, while preliminary work is in progress on a busy 1.4-mile section of Whippany Road in Hanover, running from the Bayer Corp. and past Whippany Park High School.

Work should start next week on a nearly mile-long section of West Main Street/Hawkins Place in Boonton, while a date has not yet been set for work on a half-mile connected stretch of Main Street, Chapel Hill Road and Comly Road in Lincoln Park.

In addition, work is scheduled to start the first week of November on the resurfacing of three major intersections: Columbia Turnpike and Park Avenue in Hanover and Morris townships; Hanover and Ridgedale avenues, also in Hanover and Morris townships; and Myrtle Avenue and Wooton Street in Boonton.bicycle detour sign(PNG, 4KB)

Motorists should expect delays and possible detours in connection with the resurfacing projects. Bicyclists should seek alternate routes, especially to avoid milled roads.

We have made great progress this year on a series of road projects aimed at improving the county's road infrastructure, to make driving safer and more comfortable for our residents and visitors,'' said Freeholder John Cesaro, the county governing board's liaison on roads and bridges.

We thank residents across the county for their patience in dealing with the temporary inconveniences caused to motorists and will continue to work closely with our contractors and local police to cause minimum inconvenience, and do the job right, as we wind down our 2017 paving season,'' Freeholder Cesaro added.

As part of the countywide resurfacing program, contractors recently completed work on sections of Powerville Road in Boonton Township, Meyersville Road in Long Hill and Chatham Township, and Parsippany Road in Parsippany and Hanover.

Work has begun on the following:

  • Valley Road, Long Hill: Paving is underway on 3.4-mile project, which runs from Mountain Avenue to the Somerset County line. The contractor is Schifano Construction. The bid price is $1.1 million. The project includes storm basin work, ADA ramps, milling, paving and striping. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Expect delays.Whippany Road sign(JPG, 11KB)
  • Whippany Road, Hanover: Preliminary storm basin and ADA ramp work has begun on the 1.4-mile project will run from Mt. Vernon Way to Oak Ridge Drive. Milling is expected to start on Oct. 17. Tilcon is the contractor. The bid price is $622,200. The project includes storm drains, ADA ramps, milling, paving and striping. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Motorists should expect delays.
  • West Main Street/Hawkins Place, Boonton: Preliminary work has begun on the 1-mile project, which runs from Fairview Avenue to Boonton Avenue. Milling should start on Oct. 17. The contractor is J.A. Alexander. The bid price is $395,694. The project includes ADA ramps, storm basins, milling, paving and striping. Expect delays. Work hours will be 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Projects expected to start soon:

  • Main Street, Chapel Hill Road and Comly Road, Lincoln Park: The project totals about one-half mile and includes Main Street, from Boonton Turnpike to Comly Road; Chapel Hill Road, from Boonton Turnpike to Main Street; and Comly Road, from Boonton Turnpike to Main Street. Mark Paving Co. is the contractor. The bid price is $275,080. The project includes ADA ramps, milling, paving and striping. Work hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., but start at 7 a.m. on paving days. Expect delays.
  • Intersections in Hanover, Morris Township and Boonton: Nov. 2--Work should to start on the busy West Hanover Avenue and Ridgedale Avenue intersection in Hanover Township. Nov 9--Once done in Hanover, work will move to the busiest intersection in Morris County: Park Avenue and Columbia Turnpike; and then on Nov. 10 to Myrtle Avenue and Wooten Street in Boonton. The contractor for this jointly bid project is Tilcon. The bid price for all three intersections is $383,300. Expect delays. WORK WILL BE DONE AT NIGHT, 8 P.M. TO 5 A.M.

road work ahead sign(JPG, 12KB)The 2017 county paving program is a continuation of the Freeholder Board's priority policy over the past several years of maintaining the county's high quality road network.

Overall, the Morris County Board of Freeholders have targeted upgrades to some 32 miles of county roads across 15 municipalities at a total cost of about $9 million in 2017. This effort is in addition to any ongoing or planned local or state road-improvement projects.

Efforts have been made to coordinate contractors' schedules and roadwork with municipalities, school districts, and utilities.

Completed 2017 county resurfacing projects include portions of:

  • James Street: Morristown and Morris Twp.
  • Jacksonville Road: Montville, Lincoln Park, and Pequannock
  • Mountain Ave: Long Hill
  • Loantaka Way: Chatham Twp.
  • Myrtle Ave: Boonton
  • Prospect Street/Reservoir Avenue: Boonton and Randolph
  • Berkshire Valley Road, Jefferson
  • South Hillside Avenue, Roxbury
  • Fairmount Road, Washington Township
  • Parsippany Road, Parsippany
  • Meyersville Road, Chatham and Long Hill
  • Powerville Road, Boonton Township
