Morris County: Latest Census Bureau Demographic Trends

Morris County's population rose slightly during the past decade, at a time when nearly half of all New Jersey counties experienced population declines, according to recent U.S. Census Bureau data that has been digested and analyzed by Morris County planners.(PNG, 53KB)

A Morris County Demographic and Economic Trends report recently presented to the Morris County Planning Board shows that the most recent population estimate is now 494,228. (The Census Bureau adjusts the estimates and previous estimates every year, 2018 is the most recent year.)

From 2010 to 2018, there were 10 New Jersey counties that lost population, while 11 gained new residents, including Morris County.

The highest percentage growth was Hudson County at 6.6 percent, while the largest decline was in Sussex, down 5.7 percent. Morris County was in the middle at a growth rate of 0.4 percent.

Statewide, average growth was 1.3 percent. Most urban counties grew, while rural counties contracted. Population decline in some areas was attributed to declining birth rates, aging population, a reduction in international immigration, and an increase in domestic out-migration.

Here are a few facts for Morris County culled from the data (mostly for 2010 through 2018):

  • One and two person households comprise 58 percent of the county's households;
  • The birth rate has dropped from 11 births per 1,000 residents to 9.2 births;
  • Towns with substantial population gains are Hanover Township, Morris Plains, Morristown, Mt. Olive, Netcong, Riverdale, and Rockaway Township;
  • The population over age 65 rose from 13.8 percent to 17.1 percent;
  • Asian and Hispanic residents comprise nearly 25 percent of the population;
  • Morris County is second in highest median housing values in the state at $469,900;
  • Morris County has the second highest median rent in the state at $1,456;
  • Morris County has the second highest median household income in New Jersey, at $112,288.
