Morris County OEM Urges Caution During Heat Advisory

Local Cooling Centers May Open if Conditions Worsen

The Morris County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is urging residents to take precautions as a Heat Advisory issued by the National Weather Service remains in effect through 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 30.

With heat index values expected to reach up to 104 degrees, the risk of heat-related illness is elevated -- particularly for young children, older adults, individuals with chronic health conditions and pets. County officials report an increase in 911 calls related to heat exposure and are working closely with all 39 municipalities to ensure public safety.

“We are encouraging residents to stay alert, stay hydrated and stay indoors whenever possible,” said Jeffrey Paul, director of the Morris County OEM. “We are also working with our municipal emergency management partners to ensure that cooling centers can be activated if necessary.”

Tips to Stay Safe During Extreme Heat:

  • Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
  • Avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours.
  • Remain in air-conditioned spaces as much as possible.
  • Check on elderly neighbors, individuals with special needs and those without access to cooling.
  • Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles or outside in extreme heat.

Municipal emergency management coordinators have been advised to review their local cooling center plans and be prepared to open designated facilities -- such as senior centers, libraries or municipal buildings -- if conditions worsen.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local municipal websites, social media accounts or contact NJ 211 for information on available cooling centers.
