The Morris County Office of Risk Management shares grilling safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association.
July is the leading month for grill-related fires, prompting the Morris County Office of Risk Management to remind residents about the importance of safe grilling practices. As summer celebrations heat up, please check out these safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association to help prevent injuries and reduce the risk of fires at home.
General Safety Tips
The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area.
Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and trays below the grill.
Never leave your grill unattended.
Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it.
Propane Grill Safety
Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year. Apply a light soap and water solution to the hose, bubbles will indicate a propane leak.
If you smell gas or detect a leak (even without flame), turn off the gas tank and grill immediately. If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again. If it doesn’t stop, call the fire department.
If you smell gas while cooking, move away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not move the grill.
If the flame goes out, turn the grill and gas off and wait at least 5 minutes before re-lighting.
Charcoal Grill Safety
Use a charcoal chimney starter with newspaper as fuel to ignite charcoal safely.
If using starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add fluid or other flammable liquids to the fire once lit.
Keep charcoal fluid out of reach of children and away from heat sources.
Electric charcoal starters are also available and do not use flame. Use outdoor-rated extension cords.
When finished grilling, allow coals to cool completely before disposing of them in a metal container.
