Immerse Yourself In Holiday Traditions During the Civil War-Era

(JPG, 11KB)On the weekend of Dec. 2-3, step back in time and experience the holidays during the Civil War -- to be conveniently located for that weekend right here at Historic Speedwell in Morristown.

Check out how 2nd NJ Brigade soldiers prepared food, built winter huts to keep warm, and wrote letters home to loved ones.

Stop by the historic Vail House to read actual letters from Union troops, and admire the simple, yet elegant, period decorations to provide a touch of home.

The Civil War raged on for four years, causing many soldiers experience multiple Christmases away from home. Around the holidays, it was vital to enhance the troops' morale, and offer some of the comforts of home, said Mark Sutherland, Historic Sites Manager of the Morris County Park Commission.(JPG, 17KB)

Attend a festive Officer's Ball in the 1849 Carriage House as period fiddle music fills the air. Learn authentic, historic dances, and take part in a holiday craft workshop. Enjoy hot, mulled cider and cookies as you warm up near the outdoor fire. Visit the Gift Shop filled with unique holiday decorations and holiday gifts, and stocking stuffers for the entire family.

The event will be held on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 12 noon to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Dec.3, from 12 noon to 4 p.m.
