Overnight Lane Closure on Route 23 Northbound Tonight
Published on July 25, 2025
Closure Necessary to Implement Traffic Shift
Beginning at 8 p.m. tonight, Friday, July 25, until 6 a.m. tomorrow, Saturday, July 26, one lane on Route 23 northbound and southbound is scheduled to be closed before the bridge over the Pequannock River through approximately High Crest Drive with one lane remaining open in each direction overnight. The closure is necessary to restripe the roadway and shift traffic.
The ramp from Hamburg Turnpike/County Route 694 to Route 23 northbound will remain open. A temporary stop sign will be in place at the end of the ramp.
By 6 a.m. tomorrow, Saturday, July 26, Route 23 northbound and southbound traffic will be shifted to the right with traffic using the shoulder as a travel lane. The left lane will be closed to create a median work zone to remove and reconstruct the median barrier.
The work is part of the $78.2 million, federally funded Route 23 bridge project over the Pequannock River and Hamburg Turnpike, located between mileposts 16.6 and 17.2 on the border of West Milford in Passaic County and Butler and Kinnelon in Morris County. The bridge over the Pequannock River, Hamburg Turnpike and railroad tracks will be replaced and drainage and utility improvements will be made. The project is expected to be completed in fall 2028.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
