Railroad-crossing repairs begin in Riverdale

Necessary Safety Work Requires Road Closure and Detours to Route 23 and I-287

(JPG, 7KB)A railroad crossing rehabilitation project that will require a five-day closure and detour of Matthews Avenue in Riverdale has begun today, the New Jersey Department of Transportation has announced.

Beginning this morning and through Friday, April 13, at 7 p.m., the two-way traffic on Matthews Avenue is scheduled to be closed at the railroad crossing at Hamburg Turnpike (County Route 694) and Route 23. Matthews Avenue will be open to local traffic only.

The existing railroad crossing will be removed and replaced with a new concrete crossing and asphalt approach. The following detours will be in place:

  • Vehicles headed southbound on Matthews Avenue will be directed to turn right onto I-287 southbound, then right onto Route 23 southbound

  • Vehicles headed northbound on Matthews Avenue will be directed to take the take the jughandle ramp at the Morse Avenue intersection to Route 23 southbound, and follow the detour route to I-287 northbound, take Exit 53 to Hamburg Turnpike (County Route 694) westboundNJ DOT logo(, 0B)

The traffic detours will be coordinated with the local police. If work is completed earlier, the road will be reopened accordingly.

In order to provide safer and smoother railroad crossing in Riverdale, the existing crossings will be replaced with new concrete crossings and new asphalt approaches.

This federally funded project is included within NJDOT's railroad grade-crossing safety program that repairs, upgrades, or removes approximately 30 crossings each year, statewide.
