Traffic Will be Detoured During Project
Repair work on a small county bridge on Black River Road in Washington Township is beginning this week, with detours set up to divert traffic over the next several months.
County Bridge No. 1401-260, which spans a tributary to the Black River, will close for at least 60-to-90 days while the contractor makes repairs.
The detour will run from Black River Road to Old Turnpike Road to Fairmount Road.
The existing structure length is just 12-feet-long by 21-feet wide, so small that some motorists might not realize they are going over a tiny bridge. It carries about 245 vehicles daily. It is unknown when this lightly used bridge was built.
The current structure has a wide crack in the masonry arch near the east face and the parapet wall is rotating. The repair work will include de-construction of the parapet walls and then reconstruction utilizing the existing stones.
The arches will be repaired and lightweight fill will be placed on top, followed by asphalt pavement.
Sparwick Contracting of Lafayette is doing the county-financed work at a bid price of $264,660.
