Township of Jefferson Declares State of Emergency

The unplanned closing of Route 15 South by the New Jersey Department of Transportation, between Taylor Road and Cedar Terrace, has prompted the Township of Jefferson to declare a state of emergency. The road closing is due to structural concerns with a bridge carrying Route 15 over the Rockaway River.

The NJDOT, in a conference call with area officials, said it is unknown when the state will be able to set up even a temporary bypass to accommodate southbound traffic on Route 15.

Motorists are currently being detoured through narrow, local streets in Jefferson creating an emergency situation in that area.

While the township, aided by Morris County, Sussex County and surrounding emergency and law enforcement agencies, are managing the traffic flow, motorists are urged to remain patient, plan for delays and follow the posted detour signs and the instructions of law enforcement officers monitoring traffic.

The NJDOT is promising to provide regular updates on the situation.
