Flood Mitigation Program

Flood Mitigation Program logoThe amount of flooding has increased in New Jersey. After Hurricane Irene caused massive flooding in 2011, the Board of County Commissioners expanded our floodplain mitigation efforts.

The Flood Mitigation Program is a grant program that buys flood-prone residential properties.

We work with funding partners at the local, state and federal levels. Morris County helps municipalities to buy flood-damaged properties. After structures on-site are demolished, the land is permanently preserved. The Morris County Preservation Trust Fund funds the program.

Program objectives are to provide natural open space areas for floodwater storage, decrease the loss of life and property risk, lower costs for the governments involved, and provide a new beginning for flood-prone homeowners.

Our goal is to move people and homes out of harm’s way and create new open space that will help absorb and contain future flooding.
