Rockaway Twp. Bridge Project Completed -- Span Reopened

Bridge Projects in Dover, Morris Twp., and Netcong Ongoing

Morris County has completed its replacement project of the bridge on Chestnut Terrace in Rockaway Township and has reopened the once-busy span to motor vehicle traffic.

Rockaway Township officials have been notified the project is completed and the road is now open to traffic. However, local officials noted that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Parks Lake, which is located near the bridge is closed to the public, so they will restrict public parking in that area.

The well-traveled county bridge on Chestnut Terrace, over the North End of Fox Pond (Parks Lake), has been closed since late last year due to deterioration, which required a full replacement.

The original Chestnut Terrace bridge -- or County Bridge No. 1400-889 -- was constructed in 1971, and the superstructure was replaced in 1990. Average daily traffic is approximately 2,000 vehicles per day. It is a short distance from Mt, Hope Road.

In spite of the COVID-19 crisis, the county's 2020 bridge infrastructure program is continuing on schedule. Replacement or rehabilitation of 17 bridges is planned at locations in Butler, Denville, Dover, Jefferson, Mendham Township, Morris Township, Netcong/Stanhope, Randolph, Rockaway Township, Washington Township, and Wharton.

While COVID-19 is at the forefront, county government is still working on important infrastructure projects that keep people employed and ensure that Morris County to is ready when businesses we get back to normal operation, said Morris County Freeholder Stephen Shaw.

Current projects include:

  • East Blackwell Street Bridge in Dover: Work began on Jan. 27 to replace the deck on the bridge that crosses the Rockaway River. The span is closed to motor vehicle traffic, with a 2.8-mile detour in place for up to ten months.
  • Mill Road Bridge in Morris Township: Work began Feb. 10 on a six-month project to replace the heavily used span. The project includes a detour that directs motorists to Lake Valley Road, Lake Road, and Burnham Road to Hanover Avenue.
  • Waterloo Road Bridge in Netcong, Mount Olive, and Stanhope: Work started on Feb. 3 to replace the bi-county bridge, which is suffering from severe rusting of the beams and deterioration. A 5-mile detour will be in place for about nine months.
