“Look Back on a Fallen Morris County Hero.”

Morris County Memorial Day Observance 2025

Iwo Jima Flag Raising

Morris County does not forget its heroes, especially those who have fallen in combat or during military service. As a result, the county has made it a tradition to recognize at least one by name at our Memorial Day Observance, and this year the county looks back on the 80th Anniversary of Iwo Jima and the ten U.S. Marines from Morris County who gave their lives in the 36-day battle during World War II.

Eighty years ago, on February 19, 1945, U.S. Marines landed on the island of Iwo Jima, launching what would become one of the bloodiest battles of the Pacific campaign. The fighting raged on for 36 days. The island was critical to our war effort. Its capture would provide an emergency landing strip for damaged bombers and a strategic foothold toward ending the war. Nearly 70,000 Marines fought there. More than 6,800 Americans lost their lives, and more than 19,000 were wounded. Among those who served in Iwo Jima, at least 40 were known residents of Morris County. Ten of those soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice. During the 36 days of battle, Morris County lost a Marine nearly every other day. Today, we honor those ten brave men and remember their names.
