As we prepare to celebrate the 250th birth of the United States in 2026, this project captures the development of an important milestone in the country’s history-The United States Post Office.

Before the American Revolution, most mail went back and forth, not directly among the colonies, but first went to government offices in London. With the coming of the Revolution, the colonies needed to communicate with one another without British interference.

On July 26. 1776, congress appointed Benjamin Franklin as the first Postmaster General. His directive: establish a line of posts “from Falmouth in New England to Savannah in Georgia” Franklin’s postal routes would become U.S. Highway 1.

In 1780, Two Bridges in Lincoln Park, the Continental Army established a post office. In the subsequent decades in the county, announcing a new post office signaled the prosperous growth of a community.

The post office provided employment for millions over the centuries, providing economic stability to many.
