Gettysburg: 160th Anniversary

In honor of the 160th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, the Office of Planning and Preservation has posted this list of Morris County soldiers known to haveservice-pnp-ppmsca-58300-58372r.jpg participated in the three days of fury.

One of the resonating aspects of visiting Gettysburg is viewing the artifacts associated with the battlefield. Many who study the battle are familiar with the image and history of the Humiston children; the spent shells, broken sabers and kits found on the field, but perhaps are unaware of lesser known artifacts. Not found on the battlefield but along the perimeter lines, park rangers describe the dice and cards discovered discarded by the men before battle. Poignantly, knowing that if they were killed their personal effects would be sent back home, the soldiers ditched any untoward items.
